Gender socialization
The social processes through which individuals are taught societal expectations assocaited with gender norms. Includes rewards for gender conformity and punishments for gender non conformity.
Gender norms
Socially constructed ideas of what attributes, activities and behaviors are appropriate for which gender
Gender identity
An individuals internal individual experience with gender, can not be viewed
Gender freedom
Everyones right to define, determine and change their sex to male, female or anything else on the gender spectrum, includes the right to display characteristics that are ambigous or contradictory under binarism
Gender presentation
The impression of gender an individual gives off through their apperance, includes clothing, hairstyles, behavior, body language and voice inflections. Does not always reflect their gender identity.
Gender expression
The superficial and personal ways an individual expresses their gender, may not represent their gender identity
Gender binarism
The idea that gender is closed and fixed to male and female without any variation in identity or expression
Biological sex
The sex a person was born as can be male, female, or intersex. Is indicated through sex chromosomes, internal reproductive organs, and external genitalia
Cisgender
An individual whose gender identity is associated with the sex they were assigned at birth
Transgender
An individual whose gender identity or expression differs from the one associated with the sex they were assigned at birth
