Ghana was the first great trading empire in West africa. It rose to power during the 400s and was located in the sahel. this area of mostly grass land stretched across north central Africa. Fertile soil and iron tools helped the farmers produce enough food
Songhai Empire
Songhai empire, great trading state of West Africa (flourished 15th–16th century), centred on the middle reaches of the Niger River in what is now central Mali and eventually extending west to the Atlantic coast and east into Niger and Nigeria.
Berber
Berbers are indigenous, or native, people of North Africa. They are traders.
Mansa Musa
Mansa Musa (reigned c. 1312 – c. 1337) and he was the ninth Mansa of the Mali Empire, which reached its highest reach during his rein.. Mansa Musa developed cities like Timbuktu and Gao into important cultural centers. He also brought architects from the Middle East and across Africa to design new buildings for his cities. Mansa Musa turned the kingdom of Mali into an ifficnet center of learning in the Islamic world.

Trans Saharan Caravan Trade
The trans-Saharan Trade Route was a 600-mile web of trade networks crossing Africa’s Sahara desert. It linked Northern and Western Africa. Caravans of camels and traders crossed the Trans-Saharan trade route in many places. There were some portions of the trail that ran from north to south or from east to west.
Djenne
a Songhai town and urban commune in the Inland Niger Delta region of central Mali. in 250b.c.e. it emerged as the largest traading center in West africa.
Timbuktu
a town in central Mali, on the River Niger. It became a center of Islamic culture and learning that drew scholars from places such as Cairo and Baghdad. Timbuktu ‘s location also made it an ideal trading center for gold and salt/
