Benefits of Physical Activity
Irrefutable evidence of the effectiveness of regular physical activity in the primary and secondary prevention of several chronic diseases
Physical Activity def.
Any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure and increases heart rate and breathing
Light Intensity PA def.
Does not result in sweat production or shortness of breath
Moderate Intensity PA def.
Intense enough to elevate the heart rate. A person can talk but not sing
Vigorous Intensity PA def.
Heart rate increases substantially, body temperature increases quickly and a person cannot say more than a few words at a ti me
Exercise def.
Planned, structured and repetitive PA done to improve and maintain one or more components of fitness
Physical Inactivity def.
An insufficient physical activity level to meet present physical activity recommendations
Sedentary Behaviour
Any waking behaviour characterized by an energy expenditure < 1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs), while sitting, reclining or lying posture.
How many adults are active?
Less than 2 of every 10 adults met the recommended guideline in 2016/2017
How much PA should we receive as adults?
Accumulation of 150 mins in MVPA and use 2 major muscle groups at least 2 days per week
Canadian 24-Hour movements guidelines for children and youth
- Atleast 60 mins of MVPA a day. Atleast 3 days of VPA
- 9-11 hours of sleep
- Several hours of LPA
- No more than 2 hours of sedentary behaviour
