Weight Materials - Week 2 Flashcards
Densimix - composition
Fe2O3 (Micaceous Hematite)
Densimix - Primary function
Weighting agent for all types of fluids
Densimix - secondary function
high density “kill” and packer fluids
Densimix - Features and Benefits
- Fewer % solids for a given mud weight (improved rheology and penetration rates)
- Acid soluble
Densimix - Limitations
- Maximum density attainable is 25 Ib/gal (5.0 sg)
- API specs for density, calcium and size
- More abrasive than barite
Densimix - Treatment
As needed to control borehole pressures
Mil-bar - Composition
Barium Sulphate (barite, BaSO4)
Mil-bar - Primary Function
Weighting agent for all types of drilling fluids (water, oil, synthetic)
Mil-bar - Secondary Function
Barite plugs for killing kicks
Mil-bar - Features and Benefits
- Minimum specific gravity of 4.2
- 97% of dry barite must pass through a 200 mesh screen
Mil-bar - Limitations
- Maximum density obtainable is approximately 20-22 Ib/gal
- Not acid soluble
Mil-bar - Treatments
As needed to control borehole pressures
Mil-bar 410 - Composition
Barium Sulphate (barite, BaSO4)
Mil-bar 410 - Primary function

Mil-bar 410 - Secondary function
none
Mil-bar 410 - Features and Benefits
- Minimum specific gravity of 4.1
- 97% of dry barite must pass through a 200 mesh screen
Mil-bar 410 - Limitations
- Maximum density attainable is approx. 20-22 Ib/gal
- Current distribution limited to North America
- Not acid soluble
Mil-bar 410 - Treatment
As needed to control borehole pressures
W.O. 30 - Composition
Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3)
W.O. 30 - Primary Function
Fine grade used for weighting in workover, completion and drill in fluids
W.O. 30 - Secondary function
Bridging agent (prevention of fluids invasion) for workover, completion, and drill in fluids
W.O. 30 - Features and Benefits
- 95-98% soluble in hydrochloric acid
- Maximum specific gravity of 2.7
- Comes in varying grade sizes (fine to coarse)
W.O. 30 - Limitations
Maximum attainable density is approximately 14 Ib/gal
W.O. 30 - Treatment
As needed to control borehole pressures for bridging
Deep Sweep - Composition
Course ground barite (BaSO4)
Deep Sweep - Primary Function
High Density Sweeps
Deep Sweep - Secondary Function
Barite plug for killing kicks
Deep Sweep - Features and Benefits
- Any fluid application where it is desired that the material is screened out of circulating system to maintain constant density
- Coarsely ground so surface shakers will screen it out
- Maintains a constant density in the circulating density
Deep Sweep - Limitations
- Does not meet API specifications for grind size
- Can be used to weight up the drilling fluid to 18.0+ ppg (2.16+ sg)
- Not Acid soluble
Deep Sweep - Treatment
As needed to control borehole problems
