Viscosifiers - Week 2 Flashcards
Milgel - Composition
Premium grade bentonite. Not a pure bentonite
Milgel - Primary Function
Provides viscosity in water based muds
Milgel - Secondary Function
Aids in filtration control by reducing the permeability of the filter cake
Milgel - Features and Benefits
- There are API specifications for viscosity, filtration, moisture and particle size
- the specific gravity of bentonite clays are usually in the range of 2.5-2.65
- Clays are colloidal in size - less than 2 microns
Milgel - Limitations
- High total hardness and/or chloride concentrations in the base water will reduce the yield of smectite clays
- Prehydration of the clays in fresh water are recommended under these conditions
Milgel - Treatment
A concentration of 20 Ib/bbl in fresh water will provide a minimum apparent viscosity of 10 centipoise and a maximum API filtrate of 12.5 cc. Amounts will vary according to viscosity needs
Milgel NT- Composition
Premium grade natural Wyoming bentonite (Absorbent phyllosilicate)
Milgel NT- Primary Function
Provides viscosity in water based muds
Milgel NT- Secondary Function
- Aids in filtration control by reducing the permeability of the filter cake
- Lubricant
Milgel NT- Features and Benefits
Also aids in the high temperature/ high pressure filtration properties of water based mud
Milgel NT- Treatment
A concentration of 25Ib/bbl in frest water will provide a minimum apparent viscosity of 10 centipoise and a maximum API filtrate of 12.5 cc. Amounts will vary according to viscosity needs.
Milgel NT- Limitations
High total hardness and/or chloride concentrations in the base water will reduce the yield of smectite clays. Prehydration of the clays in fresh water are recommended under the conditions.
Salt Water Gel - Composition
Attapulgite Gel - magnesium aluminium phyllosilicate
Salt Water Gel - Primary Function
Provides viscosity for fresh to saturated salt water fluids
Salt Water Gel - Secondary Function
High solids squeeze plugs for loss of circulation
Salt Water Gel - Features and Benefits
- Specific gravity of 2.2- 2.4
- light tan to grey powder
- bulk density of 44 Ib/kg^3 (705 kg/m^3)
Salt Water Gel - Limitations
- Viscosity increases are dependent on the amount of shear or agitation availible
- no fluid loss control
- API specifications for viscosity, moisture, and particle size
Salt Water Gel - Treatment
A concentration of 20 Ib/bbl in fresh water will provide a minimum apparent viscosity of 15 centipoise
Super-Col - Composition
Highly treated, premium grade Wyoming Bentonite
Super-Col - Secondary Function
Provides some fluid loss control
Super-Col - Features and Benefits
- Especially useful in areas where transportation costs are high or where storage is limited
- Rapid yield (4-5 minutes) is helpful when mixing large quantities of mud to quickly combat lost circulation
- Produces more shear thinning fluid due a lower solids content and the presence of a polymer
Super-Col - Primary Function
Provides viscosity in water based muds
Super-Col - Limitations
- Maintain total hardness less than 100 mg/L
- pH must be kept in range 8.5-11.5
Super-Col - Treatment
A concentration of 12-15 Ib/bbl in fresh water will provide a funnel viscosity of 30-35 sec/qt
Xan-Plex - Composition
High molecular weight xanthan gum biopolymer
Xan-Plex - Primary Function
Provides viscosity in fresh, sea water, NaCl, and KCl Brines
Xan-Plex - Secondary Function
Can be cross-linked with heavy metal compounds to be used in fracturing
Xan-Plex - Limitation
- May need a bactericide to prevent biodegradation
- Mix slowly (25-30 min/sack) to prevent globules (fish eyes)
- At pH above 10.0 the polymer becomes more sensitive to soluble calcium and may precipitate out of solution
Xan-Plex - Features and Benefits
-Produces a highly shear-thinnning, non-newtonian fluid. -One of the few polymers to build gel structures and therefore can be weighted
Xan-Plex D - Composition
High molecular weight xanthan gum biopolymer with dispersing agent
Xan-Plex D - Primary Function
Provides viscosity in fresh, sea water, NaCl, and KCl Brines
Xan-Plex D - Secondary Function
Can be cross-linked with heavy metal compounds to be used in fracturing
Xan-Plex D - Features and Benefits
- Produces a highly shear-thinnning, non-newtonian fluid.
- One of the few polymers to build gel structures and therefore can be weighted
Xan-Plex D - Limitations
- May need a bactericide to prevent biodegradation
- Mix slowly (25-30 min/sack) to prevent globules (fish eyes)
- At pH above 10.0 the polymer becomes more sensitive to soluble calcium and may precipitate out of solution
Xan-Plex D - Treatment
Initially .2-2.0 Ib/bbl
Xan-Plex L - Composition
Liquid xanthan gum biopolymer
Xan-Plex L - Primary Function
