What are the two most important factors in weight control that you can control?
Diet and Exercise.
What is the purpose of digestion?
To divide food into smaller particles, to be burned for energy.
What do fat, protein, and carbohydrate do when digested?
Fat, fatty acids and glycerol. Carbohydrates, single sugars. Protein, Amino acids.
What are the functions of teeth and mucus lining in stomach in digestion?
Teeth: Make food particles smaller, and break up food. Mucus Lining: Protects stomach from acids.
In which organ does absorption of digested products take place, and how does it take place?
The small intestine, and through diffusion.
How does emulsification make fat easier to digest?
It increases the surface area of the fat, making it easier to be digested.
Which intestine does digestion end?
Small.
What are the functions of the mouth, esophagus, stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine, Appendix, Rectum, Anus, Liver, Gallbladder, Pancreas.
Mouth: To salivate the food, making it easier to break up. Esophagus: To send the food from the mouth to the stomach. Stomach: Breaks up swallowed food, where protein digestion starts. Small Intestine: Help absorption of nutrients from food, where fat digestion starts and ends, and where Carbohydrates and protein are digested. Large Intestine: To take water out of the digested food. Appendix: Helps with immunity. Rectum: To store waste. Anus: To send waste out of the body. Liver: To produce bile. Gallbladder: To store bile. Pancreas: To make enzymes which break down fat and protein.
