when tense not on the verb
tense can B expressed lexically on other parts of speech in English = temporal adjunct
adjuncts
an addition, non-required element to give additional informations.
( ex : last year ; yesterday ; before they arrived ; to-be … )
verb base
core , central form of the verb that changed to create new forms
markers
usually inflectional affixes used to add in grammatical information. Cans also be inflectional word ( like ‘will’ )
English tense markers
past = -ed ; -en
future = will
English aspect markers
progressive = -ing
perfect = have + -en/-ed
What are the 4 situation types ?
State ; Activity ; Accomplishment ; Achievement
State
state of being , of fact.
-> Unchanging
cognition or emotion ( think , love , taste … )
Activity
a changing action , the endpoint is not built into the verb ( often verb with no direct object ! )
( work, write, draw , sing … )
Accomplishment
a changing action with a clear endpoint ( usually a verb with a direct object ! )
( write a letter , draw a picture , eat an apple … )
Achievement
a changing action that is rather instantaneous
( explode, blink, knock , drop, shoot … )
