RAW file

A

uncompressed image file suitable for editing and developing with image software identified by .dng, .cr2, .arw and many more. Uncompressed, lots of detail and information, high quality, large file size. Must be processed in software before being printed or used on the web or other media formats. You want to shoot RAW and process the raw to look the way you want.

A

a grainy veil in a photograph, obscuring details and making the picture appear significantly worse. Often caused by high ISO settings.

A

digital single lens reflex. A system type camera with interchangeable lenses and removable batteries. Heavier and larger than most other camera types.

The four camera types

A

mobile, compact, bridge and system. Mobile cameras include phones and tablets with small sensors and no removable lens. Compact cameras are point and shoot style lightweight pocket sized cameras with small sensors and non removable lenses. Bridge cameras are between system and compact in size and typically have a better lens and sensor than compact but does not have a removable lens. See system cameras below.

System Camera

A

dSLR and mirrorless. They have larger image sensors, interchangeable lenses and removable batteries. A “system” of components.

A

Streaking or blurring of moving objects in a photograph. It results when the image being recorded changes during the exposure, due to rapid movement and/or long exposure.
