Q

Full Frame Sensor

A

35mm film was the dominant standard in still photography until digital photography took off. The term ‘full frame’ refers to the sensor being the same size as a single negative (or frame) on a 35mm roll of film ie 24 x 36mm.

Q

Calotype

A

early photographic technique invented by William Henry Fox Talbot of Great Britain in the 1830s. In this technique, a sheet of paper coated with silver chloride was exposed to light in a camera obscura; those areas hit by light became dark in tone, yielding a negative image.

Q

Megapixel

A

one million pixels. The resolution of digital cameras and camera phones is often measured in megapixels. For example, a 12-megapixel camera can produce images with 12 million total pixels.

Q

pixel

A

the smallest item of information in an image. Pixels are arranged in a 2-dimensional grid, represented using squares. Each pixel is a sample of an original image, where more samples typically provide more accurate representations of the original.

Q

resolution

A

identified by the measurement of pixels in dimensions of height and width. For example, a camera manufacturer can describe the resolution of the camera as 3904×2598 (W x H) pixels, which again can be termed as 3904×2598=10,142,592 pixels. If this number is divided by 1 million, the figure thus attained will come out to be 10.1 megapixels.
