What is a possible tension in youth work?
Youth workers come from different background eg criminology psychology sociology and have different views on causes of crime and crime resolutions.
What is a practical framework
A framework a youth worker utilises. Based on a combination of knowledge, values and skills that provide a foundation for practice. May include personal and systemic values, policy of organisations and legislation.
What is advocacy?
Advocacy is about working side by side with youth person and provide direct representation thus taking instructions from young people. This aids young people to participate in decision making and assisting them to put decisions into action
What are the two main themes of advocacy
Protecting people who are valuable or discriminated against or are difficult to provide services to
Empowering people who need a stronger voice by enabling them to express their own needs and ultimately make their own decisions.
What are the three levels of advocacy?
Personal: working in professional capacity to assist individuals and families
Public: more public presence, public meetings educating community working with media
System or legislative: working to change legislation or policy in order to secure better services through work with politicians or government departments
What is the UNCROC?
United Nations convention on the rights of the child.
Australian joined in 1990. It is international lW and Australia is bound to comply. Not part of domestic law.
What is the duty of confidentiality
If a young person gives information to their worker in a confident matter that worker cannot spread that information
