Week Three Flashcards
Homeostasis
Regulating blood glucose level, keeping blood glucose level at right level
Glucose turns into
Glycogen
Pancreases releases what two hormones
Insulin and glucagon
If there isn’t enough insulin or it can’t get into the cells then what happens
Then sugar stays in the blood causing hyperglycaemia or high blood sugar
Insulin is needed for what
Help sugar unto the cells so it can be used at fuel
Type 1 diabetes
Pancreases no longer produces insulin
Type 2 diabetes
The body’s tissues are no longer sensitive to insulin and glucose in the blood
Key symptoms of diabetes
Increase urination and increased thirst
Why does a person with diabetes have to urinate a lot
They are trying to get glucose out of their body
Other symptoms of diabetes
Tiredness
Loss of weight
Vaginitis
The most common type of diabetes
Type II
Short term complications of diabetes
Hyperglycaemia
Hypoglycaemia
Hyperglycaemia
Abnormally high blood glucose level
Signs and symptoms of hyperglycaemia
Nausea and vomiting
SOB
Loss of appetite
Hypoglycaemia
Abnormally low blood glucose level. Receiving too much insulin
Signs and symptoms of hypoglycaemia
Excessive sweating
Fast breathing
Fast heart rate
First aid for hypoglycaemia if conscious
Test glucose levels
Give client 4 glucose tablets, or juice
Wait 15 minutes then retest
Keep repeating until 4 mmol/L or higher
Then give meal with protein
Long term complications of diabetes
Hypertension
Damage to kidney
Risk of heart attack and stroke
What is very important to check for diabetic clients
Check their feet
Peripheral neuropathy
Chronically high blood glucose levels can cause nerve damage, particularly in the hands and feet
Can you cut the toe nails for an diabetic client
No only a trained professional can
Food break down into glucose
Glucose molecules must enter into the cell
Need insulin to enter the cell
Glucagon
Is a hormone that breaks down stored glucose so glucose can enter your blood stream and bring your blood sugar up
Hyperthyroidism
Caused by an overactive thyroid gland, resulting in too much thyroid being produced
