Week 7 Neurological Conditions Flashcards
Stroke
death of brain cells
Functions are lost or impaired
Thrombotic stoke
The process of clot formation (thrombosis) results in a narrowing of lumen, which blocks the passage of the blood through the artery
Embolic stroke
An embolus is a blood clot or other debris circulating in the blood. It lodges and blocks the flow of blood
Hemorrhagic stroke
A burst blood vessel may allow blood to deep into and damage brain tissue until clotting shuts off the leak
Transient uschemic attack (TIA)
Transient episode of neurological dysfunction caused by focal brain, spinal cord, retinal ischemia, without acute infarction of the brain.
TIA last for how long
Less then one hour
Warning signs of stroke
Facial drooping
Arm weakness
Slurred speech
Time you respond
Effects of stroke
Hemiplegia
Loss of facial muscle control
Loss of vision
Emotional changes
What a psw can do for someone with stroke
Place stuff on affected side
Encourage passive ROM
Assist with transfers
Reposition
Psw intervention for altered sensory perception
Avoid using extremity due to risk of injury
Be aware of tempature of bath water, food, etc
Inspect skin
Psw intervention impaired verbal communication
Listen attentively
Use alternative communications aids
Psw intervention unilateral neglect
Monitor responses to the three primary types of stimuli: sensory, visual, auditory
Psw intervention impaired swallowing
High Fowler position
Place food on unaffected side of mouth
Take 1/3 of spoon full
How long to see recovery from stroke before it is permenant
