What are the criteria for having an intellectual disability?
- Individuals over 6 years of age
- IQ score of 2 standard deviations below the mean
- Disability manifested prior to 18 years of age
- Significant deficits in 2 or more areas of adaptive behaviour
What is an Adaptive Behaviour Assessment?
Looks at daily living skills, assessment of conceptual, social, practical self-help - assessment done by observation.
What principle underlies behaviour intervention?
All behaviour serves a purpose. It has a function, ask ‘why’.
What are the ten causalities of intellectual disabilities?
Infections and intoxications; trauma or physical agent; metabolism or nutrition; gross brain disease; chromosomal abnormalities; unknown prenatal influence; other conditions originating in the prenatal period (low birth weight); following psychiatric disorder; environmental influences; other conditions
What are some of the ethical considerations when it comes to the assessment of an individuals with an intellectual disability?
Consent; need for the assessment; record keeping; who is asking for the report and why
What are the components of a full behaviour intervention and support service? (4) (All behaviour serves a purpose)
Behaviour assessment; lifestyle and environment review; incident prevention and response plan; programme development, implementation and review.

Asking for help; practice at low-stress times
What important information is there to remember when providing training for individuals with ID?
Type and focus of training must be take into account level of functioning; use of words vs pictures; individuals willingness to be involved; every individual is different
What is a restrictive practice?
Support strategies that impose restrictions; used with the intention of influencing or changing behaviour.
What is a restricted practice?
Have additional safeguards placed on them to ensure they are being used appropriately and safely and in keeping with best practice. E.g. physical restraint, restricted access
