Brief therapy, CBT, DBT, ACT, ITP, career’s assessment and counselling, motivational interviewing techniques, play therapy, art therapy, craft therapy, relation techniques, mindfulness exercise.
Who has access to a students guidance files?
Counsellor, supervisor (DGO), parents - application to go through court of law however
What are some of the contributing factors in challenging behaviours?
Impulsivity, Exposure to trauma, drugs and alcohol abuse, Poor problem solving, Limited social connections - socially isolated, Inconsistent parenting, Learning difficulties, Genetic disorders
Currently, school counsellors are what?
Experienced teachers who have a degree in psychology and post-graduate qualifications in school counselling or educational psychology.
Who do educational psychologists work with?
Students of all ages, and their families, from pre-school to year 12.
What does the work of an educational psychologist include?
Counselling students; assisting parents or carers to make informed decisions about their child’s education; assessing students’ learning and behaviour; assisting schools to identify and address disabilities that affect students’ learning; liaising with other agencies concerned with the well-being of students; providing professional learning
What is the role of the school counsellor?
Counselling, consultation, assessment, primary prevention, research, professional practice, professional development
What type of assessments would be used by an educational psychologist?
IQ tests and tests of development; Achievement tests; ‘GATS’ classes - primary and secondary; early intervention programs; depression/anxiety scales; autism scales
What does primary prevention refer to in educational psychology?
Strategies which can involve the modification of the environment to encourage growth and development
What are some examples of the types of primary prevention ed-psyc uses?
Social skills training - you can do it; peer mediation; self esteem programs
What is different about education psychology compared to otters areas of psychology in relation to training requirements?
Need teaching experience/qualification
Before taking a client’s history during their first session, what issues might you want to raise with them?
Confidentiality, purpose of interview, concerns talking to a therapist, when to see them, discuss clients expectations of therapy.
