What is self serving bias?
More attracted to the things we are good at and perceive we will be successful at
What is self acceptance?
Becoming aware of and accepting your admitted faults and limitations
What is self enhancement hypothesis?
The direction of relationship from self esteem to achievement or physical activity behaviour i.e. people with high sports confidence will be more attracted to the sports they feel they will excel at
What is skill development hypothesis?
The experience of achievement enhances self esteem
What is self perception discrepancy?
The difference between your competency rating and the importance that you attach to it. If there’s a gap between the two there’s a discrepancy
What do the physical self perception profile and the physical self description questionnaire both have in common?
Both examine higher-order global physical self-worth underpinned by more specific lower-order self perceptions
Both permit the assessment of relationships between physical self and global self esteem
What is the likely relationship between perceived importance and competence ratings of physical attributes in high self esteem youth?
Strong positive - evidence that high self esteem youth are attaching importance to what they are good at (also evidence of discounting)
What are some of the broader decisions on policy and practice that need to be reflected on?
Curricular and extra curricular activities
Usually a PE dept, led by head of PE
Department can have own influence but school can also adopt whole school approaches
Try to prepare children for lifelong PA
Often diversity within departments, difficult for new young members of staff to suggest change
Review policies such as clothing and display materials
How should teachers/coaches take into account normative ability?
Don’t over-emphasise social comparison and competition outcomes
Children need to be educated on how to conduct themselves after loss
What is meant by self referenced definition of competence?
Emphasise self improvement and task mastery to enhance sense of physical self competence

How should coaches use feedback/praise?
Avoid too much positive feedback based on ‘natural talent’
Avoid over-praising or too much neutral praise
Praise the responsiveness and gains following instruction (the process of improvement and task mastery)
Why is social support important?
Children need social support (from adults and peers)- unconditionally
Should not make social support contingent on performance (can lead to contingent self esteem)
Why is it possible harder for teachers than coaches or parents?
More kids
Don’t see as frequently
Greater range of children
Many of them don’t want to be there
