Assistant role for Temp/Provisional Restoration

A

-Fabricates/places provisional/temp
-Cements in place using temp cements
-Removes residue cements using explorer (Supra & Subgingival)
-Checks & adjusts bite with slow speed handpiece and round bur and/or carving instrument

Note: Dentist performs final check before patient is dismissed

A

Many products available for cementing:
-temporary
-tooth sensitivity
-manual mix
-auto-mix

Always follow product manufactures instructions
-Refer to interim fabrication and cement directive

A

Zinc Oxide temp with eugenol (ZOE)
Temp Bond temporary without eugenol *used at SAIT
Polycarboxlate temporary luting (base)
Resin temporary luting (calcium hydroxide)

Post Op Instructions for Temporary Restoration/Crown

A

Avoid sticky/chewy foods
The teeth and gingival tissue may be sensitive - overthe counter analgesic
-If pain persists call the office
-if the temp restoration becomes dislodged call the office immediately
-Gently brush and floss the area
-Remind patient not to pull floss through the contact, but through the embrasure
- stays in mouth for no longer than 90 days

No a template is not required

A

Use a syringe of temporary restorative material to squeeze into prepped tooth

Permanent Delivery / Insert Appointment - Assistant Role:

A

-remove temp restoration
-keep temp restoration until patient is dismissed
-cleans tooth from any residual material
-address patient concerns if present
This is when permanent restoration is permanently cemented

A

When permanent restoration is permanently
cemented.

* reuse temporary

Permanent Delivery / Insert Appointment - Dentist role:

A

The prosthetic is placed onto the preparation and dentist will asses for:
-Marginal fit - explorer
-Contact pressure - floss
-Occlusion - articulating paper (dentist may do minor adjustment with handpiece)
-Esthetic - patient input, mirror

  • If any of the above do not satisify the dentist & patient, the final impression must be repeated and the crown remade

How does assistant remove temp restoration?

A

Uses PFI or finger pressure to lift and remove crowns or bridges
-gently lift interproxial and along the margins if using PFI
-clean the tempoary restoration
