What is a Prosthodontist?
The dentist who is committed to the restoration and replacement of teeth focusing on fixed or removable prosthodontics. Additional 3-year training at a university
Indications for Fixed Prosthodontics
- 1 or 2 adjacent teeth are missing in the same arch
-the supportive tissues are healthy
-suitable teeth are present
-the patient is in good health and wants the prosthesis placed
-the patient has the skills and motivation to maintain good oral hygiene
Contraindications for Fixed Prosthodontics
- the supportive tissues are diseased or missing
-suitable teeth are not present
-the patient is in poor health
-the patient is not motivated to have the prosthesis placed
-the patient has poor oral hygiene habits
-the patient cannot afford the treatment $$$
3 Stages for Fixed Prosthetic Appointment
- Treatment plan, cost, prelim impressions/other diagnostic tools appointment - assistant takes impressions, pours study models, etc.
- Dentist prepares teeth - Assistant fabricates and cements temporary restoration
- Insert permanent prosthetic - dentist inserts/delivers permanent prosthetic - assistant removes permanent cement
What type of technology requires only 1 appointment?
Digital - Cerec Technology
Impressions are not required, digital impressions are taken

-Veneers
-Crowns
-Fixed bridge
-Implant related indirect restorations
What is an Inlay?
-Involves the proximal surface and only a portion of the occlusal surface
- cusps are NOT involved
-placed on posterior
May be made from: porcelain, other ceramics, gold (depends on cost)
What is an Onlay?
-involves the proximal surface and most or all of the occlusal surface
- cusps are involved
-placed on posterior
May be made from: gold, porcelain, other ceramics (depends on cost)
What are Veneers?
- a thin shell of tooth-coloured material
-made from: porcelain or other ceramic
-placed on ANTERIOR teeth
2 Types of Veneers
- Direct Veneers
- Indirect Veneers
What are Direct Veneers made of?
Composite material (direct application - on site)
What are Indirect Veneers made from?
Porcelain or Ceramic, fabricated in the dental laboratory (indirect application - off site)
3 Types of Crowns
- Full Crowns - completely around tooth
- Three-Quarter Crown - some enamel can be saved, not surrounding entire tooth
- Implant Supported Crown - all artificial
Reason for a Crown?
Decay is too extensive - an inlay or onlay can not be used
What are implant supported indirect restoration?
Artificial teeth are anchored to surgically embeded tissue or bone
What is the most common type of implant?
Endosteal implant
What is a Subperiosteal implant?
Placed under and on top of bone, not enough alveolar ridge
What is a Transosteal implant?
Inserted on the mandible when ridges are severely resorbed
