What is provisional coverage?
Is a temporary protective crown or bridge that is temporarily cemented to a tooth that has been prepared to recieve a single crown, or to the abutment teeth for a fixed bridge
Is it within RDA scope of practice in AB to fabricate temporary restoration and temporary cement them?
Yes! they are only intended to stay for 90 days
Provisional coverage indications
-Protect pulp from sensitivity
-Maintain periodontal health
-Provide occlusal stability
-Maintain tooth position within the arch (adjacent teeth may shift if not)
-Protect the margins and preparation from fracture
-Be colour compatible with adjacent teeth

What is the most common type of temporary coverage used?
Most common type of temporary coverage used for crown & bridge prepararations is CUSTOM Provisional

- can be the most time consuming dental prostheses to make
-provide the best-fitting and most natural looking restoration
-can be used for posterior or anterior crowns or bridges

What is the Indirect Method?
Gypsum model used - stent made prior to patient appointment
- Various dental materials used: alginate material, PVS, plastic resin (clear stent)
- Various impression trays used: kwik trays, triple trays, quadrant trays
What must be present prior to the dentist preparing the teeth?

Polycarbonate crowns
-can be used for posterior & anterior applications
-these shell like crowns are available for single unit teeth
Cellulose Acetate
-thin clear shell available in all tooth types
-shell is used as a carrier of the provisional material
Stainless Steel Crowns and Tin
Used for primary posterior teeth
-can be trimmed, adapted with contouring pliers, and cemented with a high strength cement
Laboratory Fabricated Provisional
-Used less frequently
-Preliminary impression and cast of teeth are prepared and sent to the laboratory well in advance of preparation appointment
Often used for veneers - so patient can get a test drive before permanent veneer is placed
