Week 9 Memory ch6 Flashcards
4 ways to encode
-elaborate
-organize
-visualize
-make it personal
Who wanted to test how long memories lasted after encoding and how did he do it
Ebbinghaus, he taught himself random sequences of numbers, he inspired the forgetting curve memory declines after 20 minutes
Storage
is about maintaining the info in memory overtime
-there are many different ways to forget information
Sensory memories
iconic
echoic
is the first storage is the briefest
is visual and briefer
is auditory & longer
Short term memory
( 20s)
-slightly longer but not by much
-stored sequentially
-unrehearsed info is lost
serial position
the psychological tendency to remember the first and last items in a list better than those in the middle
primacy effect
recency effect
first numbers
last numbers
Working memory
It is how memory is pulled
-its a temporary storage
-but it retrieves memory from the the long term
-it focused attention and manipulates info
Long term memory
The duration is indefinite it has unlimited capacity
But it must be stored associatively
