She had a degenerative disorder that affected the amygdala and did not feel fear
What is the Papez circuit of emotion?
Hypothalamus, anterior thalamus, cingulate gyrus and hippocampus
What other structures were added later?
Broca’s limbic lobe, subcortical nuclei and portions of basal ganglia.
Paul Maclean later added amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex
What is the Dimensions of Emotion approach?
Emotions are reactions to events on a continuum. Characterized by two factors - valence (pleasant/ unpleasant) and arousal (high/ low intensity)
What is the Davidson and colleagues (1990) approach and withdrawal theory?
different emotional states motivate us to either approach or withdraw
What is the amygdala necessary for in emotion?
Implicit expression of emotional learning but not all memory.
Critical for the acquisition and expression of implicitly conditioned fear responses
What is the hippocampus necessary for in emotion?
Acquisition of explicit knowledge of the emotional properties of stimulus
