Week 9 - Cognitive (Kelly) Flashcards
Explain Personal Construct Theory
Behaviour depends on how we process and understand information , we can predict what happens next
Define Constructive Alternativism (Personal Construct Theory)
There are multiple ways for a person to view the world
Define / Features of a construct (Kelly)
Individuals knowledge of interpreting world
Theory - Hypothesis - Test - Result - Amend
We look for differences / similarities on past experiences to predict personality
Personal constricts are continuous rather than dichotomous
3 elements for the formation of a construct
2 similar elements
1 different element (bipolar adjective)
Viewed opposite
Eg. Happiness , cheery , sad
Define verbal and pre-verbal construct
Verbal = expressed in words
Pre-Verbal = no words expressed
How are constructs organised in a hierarchy?
Broad constructs and narrow constructs
Organised differently for everyone , we attempt to control and predict our environment
Rep Test to examine ones construct
Development of a list based on role title (significant others)
3 comparisons made
Complex = more accurate in prediction
Inconstancy = Modify to become more accurate / fine tune for future
(Similarity and Contrast are 2 poles of a construct
How do constructs influence behaviour?
We want to predict behaviour - anticipate the future not past
