Why did the humanistic approach emerge
Needed a focus on human qualities rather than environmental- freedom, choice, personal growth , peace
Define extentialism
Emphasise on free will , personality is a conscious experience

Focus on subjective feelings / put yourself in their shoes

Based on theory to meet needs
Self actualisated = making use of full potential
Motivated by hierarchy of needs

Bottom needs to be met before progression
Features of a self-actualised person
At peace , not dependant on others , mission in life
Willing to change , take responsibility , make use og positivity

Actual Self = our impression
Real Self = actual behaviour
Ideal self = what we would like to be
Congruence = match , personality
Incongruence = poor mental health , anxiety
Define Conditional and Unconditional congruence
Conditional = parent gives unconditional love
Unconditional = given independently of worth
- positive (=congruence ) and conditional positive (incongruence) regard
