Language: An abstract, and symbolic system of communication which is culturally transmitted.
Communication and language are two different things!
Language both reflects reality, and refers primarily to reality (commonsense view).
Shapes our thoughts, feelings, and descriptions.
i.e. translation
Sign:
Sign: something that can be interpreted as having meaning.
Signs do not exist by themselves- they exist only in connection to other signs.
signified
Signified: the meaning of a sign (the mental concept).
signifier
Signifier: the material form of a concept (something which can be seen, heard, felt, etc).
Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

Language mediates between us and the world around us- perception is always mediated.
Whorf and Sapir:
Role of linguistic cures in behaviour.

What we say and how we say it are often influenced by variables such as our age, gender, education, ethnicity, and our goals.
Some forms of language, spoken by people from different social statuses, have a different status in society.
Sociolinguistics
The study of the relationship between language and social structure and how language is used society.
Terms of address-
useful for understanding the social relationship between two people.
BY LOOKING AT THIS, it reflects the social status. We call the teachers professor where the other coworkers call her Kelsey. Respect and distinguishing the relationship between them
Language and gender
Different genders use language differently.
Pronouns- influence both our understanding of gender, and our understanding of particular concepts of gender.
Gendered talk- socialized to speak differently

The use of a rising questioning intention when making statements.
