Social Exclusion
A process whereby some groups in society are denied access to material and social resources, thereby excluding their full participation in society. It produces inequality in outcomes.
Race
A term WITHOUT scientific basis that uses skin colour and facial features to describe allegedly biologically different groups of humans. It is a SOCIAL CONSTRUCTION that is used to categorize groups of people and usually implies assumed and unproved intellectual superiority or inferiority
Ethnic Group
People who share an ethnic background and interact with each other on the basis of their shared ethnicity
Racialized Groups
The term preferred by those who work with visible minorities. The term captures the fact that certain groups are treated as inferior by the dominant group
Racism
Beliefs and actions used to discriminate against a group of people because of their physical and cultural characteristics
Human rights and Anti-Racism Frameworks
Research and social action that focus on addressing health inequities at the local and global level

Healthy Immigrant Effect
newly arrived immigrants appear to have a healthy advantage but after a period of time their health status tends to converge towards that of the host population
Refugees
Individuals who flee their country of origin because of fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, political opinion, nationality or membership in a particular social group
Culturally Competent Health Care
Delivery of health-care services in a way that recognizes the cultural beliefs and needs of those they serve
