WEEK 9 Flashcards
thematic analysis
what is the definition of ‘thematic analysis’:
Thematic Analysis is a method used for identifying, analysing and reporting patterns (themes) within qual data
Thematic Analysis Pro’s and Con’s
- Form of pattern recognition within qual data
-Flexible approach to qual analysis
-Can lead to rich, detailed and nuanced analysis
-Can lead to poorly constructed analysis
What is Semantic Coding:
- Semantic codes are identified through the explicit or surface meanings of the data
-Identifies themes based only on what is explicitly stated- things are taken at face value
-Ignores underlying meanings/ descriptive codes
What is Latent Coding?
Latent Coding examines the reasons for semantic content
-Data is taken at face value, and meanings are theorised
-Involves an element of interpretation
When should you use Semantic VS Latent Coding?
*Depends on the type of data being analysed
Semantic: Explicit opinions expressed in interviews
Latent: The underlying meaning expressed by pp’s in focus groups
What are the 6 stages of thematic analysis? - Braun and Clarke
- Familiarisation with the data
-Generating codes
-Generating initial themes
-Reviewing initial themes
-Defining and naming themes
-Producing the report
What is ‘Bracketing’?
Bracketing is a method used in qual research to mitigate the potential effects the preconceptions may have on the analysis
