WEEK 7 Flashcards
Coding and Interpreting Qual Data
What can analysis be defined as?
- A systematic, rigorous and logical process where data is given meaning
5 Approaches to analysing qual data:
-Content Analysis (Counting)
-Template Analysis (Deductive Approach)
-Thematic Analysis (Deductive and Inductive)
-Discourse Analysis (Analysing the structure of texts)
-Conversation Analysis (Studying social interaction)
What are the step by step stages of coding:
-Transcribe the data
-Read/ Reflect upon notes
-Add codes
-Search for themes
-Review and refine themes
-Define and Name all themes
Ways you can preserve anonymity:
-Use names with the same syllable length
-Maintain gender
-Preserve ethnicity
-Country names can be left
- Institutional names should be changed
What is the definition of ‘interpretation’:
Finding meaning in something which may not be imminently obvious
Content Analysis
-Observational method used to analyse qual data
-words/themes > QUAN data > inferential test
Template Analysis
- Analysing textual data, developing a coding ‘template’ which summarises themes identified by the researcher
-Hierarchal coding
Thematic Analysis
- Applied to a set of data/ text and the researcher analyses themes
- Braun and Clarke
Discourse Analysis
- Examines language/ discourse in communication
- identifies patterns/ context/ power dynamics
Conversation Analysis
- Focus on HOW lang is used in convo, rather than what is said
-non verbal cues, turn-taking, context etc
