Week 8: Vocab Flashcards
Angiogenesis
successful tumors secrete chemical signals that cause blood vessels to sporut from the circulatory system - results in heavy cells receiving less oxygen and good molecules
Cancer
A disease of uncontrolled cell proliferation
Colonoscopy
A procedure used to examine the large intestine, rectum, and anus to screen men and women for colon or rectal cancer
Growth Inhibitor
A signal molecule that prevents cell division
Immunotherapy
patient’s immune system is used to fight cancer
Oncogene
A gene that tells the cell to divide in the absence of normal instructions to do so
Transcription Factor
A molecule that regulates which genes are active in a cell
Apoptosis
Cell Death
Cell Cycle
4 distinct phases of cell life: mitosis (the chromosomes separate into daughter cells), Gap 1 (the cell grows), DNA synthesis (the chromosomes replicate), and Gap 2 (the cell grows and prepares again for mitosis)
Cyst
A fluid-filled sac
Melanoma
An invasive and deadly skin cancer
Malignant
cell growth that continues in an uncontrolled manner, resulting in cancer
Proto-Oncogene
A gene that encodes for a protein that regulates cell division
Tumor
A lump that results from the production of extra cells
Benign
Harmless, doesn’t grow or spread
