Week 8- Introduction to Evidence Flashcards
Describe data analysis in qualitative research
- Holistic approach
- Large amounts of data in transcripts and notes
- Data collection and analysis takes side by side
- Generation of themes, categories, codes, explanations
What is content analysis?
- Systematic coding & categorisation approach
- Looking for trends and patterns of words used, their frequency, relationships, structures, communications
What is an example of rigour in qualitative research?
Trustworthiness
-demonstration that evidence for results reported are sound when argument based on results is strong
Describe how credibility increases trustworthiness of research
Establishing results are credible or believable from perspective of participant in research
Describe how transferability increases trustworthiness of research
Results can be generalised or transferred to other contexts or settings
Describe how dependability increases trustworthiness of research
Assumption of replicability or repeatability
Describe how confirmibility increases trustworthiness of research
Results could be confirmed by others
What are strategies that can improve rigour and trustworthiness in qualitative research?
- Purposive sampling
- Triangulation (different ways to collect same data)
- Audit of data collection
- Multiple coders
- Respondent validation/member checking
- External observer (reduces bias)
- Peer debriefing/review
Describe role of ethics in qualitative research
- Respect for persons: ensuring autonomy of research participants
- Justice: ensuring a fair distribution of risks and benefits resulting form research
- Beneficence: Minimising risks associated with research
- Important to seek and obtain informed consent
