what is culture
being a part of something, community, diverse groups, identity, traditions, uniqueness, social norms, common practices

ethnicity
a way of describing social identity with a group that is based on a shared history and social structure
cultural pluralism or cultural relativism

Race
a social construction involving the classification of individuals into arbitrary groups and the assignment of disparate meaning and value to those constructed groups
multiculturalism
engaging with cultures as different but equal. The integration of practices of diversity, tolerance, respect for multiple ways of knowing and being with issues of equity and social justice
what are the 3 levels of racism
institutional, personally mediated, and internalized
cultural competence
lifelong process of approaching relationships with openness and humility rather than focusing on knowing specific cultured awareness, attitudes, behaviours
cultural safety
respectful engagement that recognizes power imbalances inherent in the healthcare system. results in env. free of racism and discrimination, where people feel safe when receiving health care
cultural attunement
relational process, way of being in relation to “other”
cultural humility
process of self reflection to understand personal and systemic biases and to develop and maintain respectful processes and relationships based on mutual trust. acknowledge yourself as a learner
how do we work across differences?
see and address systemic structures

how do we have respectful relations?
- respect for and honouring of the client and their experiences
- curiosity about the client and the social, historical, cultural, and political factors that impact their lives
- practice reflects on understanding of the importance of the context in which people live and the connection and interconnections that shape relationship and health and healthcare.
how is culture a SDOH?
people face additional health risks due to socioeconomic env. which is largely determined by dominant cultural values that perpetuate marginalization, stigmatization, loss, or devaluation of others.
