Branch of philosophy that deals with right and wrong, ought and ought not

Ethics in nursing:
- a branch of applied ethics concerned w activities in nursing
- requires self reflection on own values and beliefs.
- understanding values and ethical standards of nursing bodies.
- reflective practice
- interprofessional collaboration
- understanding of ethical decision making.
Everyday ethics:
ongoing reflection on ethical commitments and ethically sound practice everyday in all context and domains of nursing practice at all levels od decision making.
Concepts for ethical nursing practice: self-reflection
- spend time now exploring your values, beliefs, attitudes, perceptions and needs.
- reflect on your interactions with people - how other-oriented are you
- try keeping a journal of your reflections and learning
Concepts for ethical nursing practice: reflexivity:
being aware of what we are doing, and what you are thinking as it is happening.
Concepts for ethical nursing practice: reflective practice.
the ability to reflect on one’s actions so as to engage in a process of continuous learning
Personal vs. Professional values
- personal values are influenced by childhood caretakers, spiritual, religious beliefs, and life experiences.
- professional values are learned during professional education and experiences.
- personal values cannot obstruct care for clients with differing values.
