What type of diet do people with lower income rely on and give examples with their time periods?
They rely on low cost, high-energy diet which tends to be nutrient poor. Ex:
1) medieval Europe: bread
2) 19th century Ireland: potato
3) Today: processed foods and refined carbohydrates
Why did they introduce a food guide in Canada?
There was a lot of nutrition concern during the great depression so Canada introduced its official food rules in 1942

the inability to acquire or consume an adequate diet quality or sufficient quantity

Why are indigenous people the highest to face issues?
1) Low income
2) High prices
3) Lack of fresh foods

Why were food banks introduced?
To create a short term stop-gap measure to deal with the fallout from the economic downturn in the early 1980s
Why are food banks criticized?
They obscure the issue of food security by creating the illusion of a solution to the problem. Basically the real problem lies in low income wages, high cost of housing, insecure of employment
What is the interplay of obesity and women?
The lower the womans income and education, the higher the probability that she will become obese due to
1) Disorder eating patterns
2) Dieting and bingeing
Why are diets in America not healthy?
1) Too much read meat
2) Too few veggies and fresh fruit
3) Excessive sugar and salt intake
How does education and income play with the health eating index score?
The lower the income and education, the lower the index
Do supplements compensate for poor diet?
NO with the exception of folate and iron in pregnant women and vitamin D. better nutrition comes from diet diversity
Does better diet change health outcomes at the individual level?
No except for malnourished people but there are population benefits for Canadians if diets were to improve
