How can critical thinking be developed?
1) Internal processes:
- Reflecting on values, assumptions and thinking
2) External process:
- Engaging in critical questioning and writing to develop and communicate thought
What are the 3 levels of critical thinking?
1) Basic: the learner trusts that experts have the right answers for every problem. Thinking is concrete
2) Complex: separate your thinking from authorities and begin to analyze and examine your own choices independently. A willingness to consider other options or explanations, thinking is more creative and innovative.
3) Commitment: anticipate the need to make choices without assistance and assume the responsibility for those choices. You give attention to the results of the decision and determine whether it was appropriate.
How does research tie with nursing?
Use research to engage in evidence based practice to foster critical thinking skills. 4 steps

Define reflection
The act of wondering about a phenomenon and seeking its deeper understanding
Define reflexivity
Challenging personal beliefs and assumptions to improve professional and personal practice.
- Pushes us to be aware of our own interests and motivations
define reflection in action and reflection on action
- reflection IN action occurs in the moment
- reflection ON action is thinking back and considering how/what you did
define Brenner’s 7 competency domains
1) helping role

Define minifism and give an example:
Minimize the severity of a particular event. Usually used to help the patient feel less embarrassed
Ex: asking visitors to leave to perform an intimate body care

1) Ability to grasp meaning in client
2) Ability to establish a meaningful connection with the client
3) Ability to skillfully perform nursing activities
