Week 7: Sports Psychology (Chapter 6) Flashcards
Sports Psychology
The study (and application) of psychological research to sport and exercise.
Team “Inputs”
Overall ability, playing personalities, and coaching styles.
Team “Outputs”
Performance and satisfaction.
Team Chemistry
Some teams have a magic “connection” whereas some don’t.
- Factors that contribute to chemistry lie between both inputs and outputs.
Team Cohesion
A dynamic process which is reflected in the tendency for a group to stick together and remain united in the pursuit of its instrumental objectives and/or satisfaction of member affective needs.
- Unity, camaraderie, how much you “get along” or feel “like family”.
4 Characteristics of Team Cohesion
- Multidimensional:
- Cohesion is the sum of several interrelated factors.
- Dynamic:
- Cohesion does tend to fluctuate over time.
- Affective:
- The emotional state of the athlete (how they feel about one another).
- Instrumental:
- Goals + objectives are the most obvious features that keep a team united (ex. the goal of winning the champions league).
Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ)
The most common measurement for measuring cohesion.
Questionnaire with 18 likert-type questions.
2 dimensions (group + social) result in 4 factors of team cohesion.
- Group Integration - Social
- Group Integration - Task
- Individual Attraction to Group - Social
- Individual Attraction to Group - Task
Self-Talk in Sport
- Our inner dialogue that has a profound impact on our performance.
- Increases motivation (encouragement) and directs attention (improves focus).
- 3 main categories of self-talk: self expression, interpretive, and self-regulatory.
Self Expression
Expression of our thoughts/feelings/appraisals.
- ex. “This is really exciting!”
Interpretive
Working through an emotion or experience.
- “I’m so nervous, but I’ve practiced lots and can perform well.”
Self-Regulatory
Intentional behaviour guidance (self-motivating).
- Ex. “Keep pushing!”
