Define Media
form through which something is communicated or expressed. Including work of art (paint & stone, tech… radio, television, film) Influence public opinion
According to Marshall McLahan, what is a medium?
Technological form that amplifies, accelerates and extends our bodies for info communication & cultural transmission
ex. cars, trains, light bulbs, shoes, vocal & hand gestures.
Major impact on message itself
Convergence of Media
1960s & 70s films and cartoons converge. Internet converges all media into one platform. Phones converge a lot as well.
ex. Amazon: print media, online selling, streaming, media production
Mass Culture
culture & society of general population who receive most of info from mass culture
Mass Media
forms of communication that reach large numbers of people in relatively short time frame
ex. radio, television, newspaper, cinema
ex. Urban to Suburban
Propaganda
Info especially of biased/misleading nature, used to promote/publicized a particular political cause/pov (disinformation, brainwashing)
ex. Joseph Stalin Poster, Mao Zedong

Today w/ digital media there is no longer one mass audience
Citizen Journalism
process by which ordinary citizens participate in dissemination and production of news
How does radio wave television work?
Long distance transmission from television station antennae ending radio waves to a small television set (1960s- more consistent)
How does satellite television work?
Ground equipment transmits signal to satellite in space, changes frequent & transmits back to earth to ground equipment in a different location
ex. cable tv- late 1970s. internet- 1960s, early 2010s
Media as National Identity
both affirm nationalism & critique it, newspaper & tv central in creation of national identity, collective public viewings can interpellate viewers as part of national audience/political movement
Public sphere
physical space, social setting, over media arena in which citizens come together to debate & discuss pressing issues
ex. reddit
Global media event
largely based on concept of TV as unifying force.
ex. World Cup, Olympics, 9/11
Spectacle
event/image that is particularly striking in its visual display to point of inspiring awe, 9/11
