Causation
The relationship between events where one event directly makes the other occur.
Correlation
The relationship between events that usually occur in tandem.
Investigation
A process that results in an explanation or pattern.
Mystery
The part of an investigation when there are no obvious good rival explanations or hypotheses to consider, or no evidence to support or undermine any of the rival hypotheses.
Pattern
A description of the events that usually follow whenever a particular type of situation occurs.
Prediction
The selection of the most appropriate pattern to describe likely events in advance.
Troubleshooting
The part of an investigation that focuses on strategic and creative evidence collection. It involves testing hypotheses by collecting and analysing evidence until one of the rival hypotheses is clearly better than the others.
