Week 7 Flashcards
Motivational Interviewing
Who are the founders of motivational interviewing?
William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick
Describe the Transtheoretical Model of Change and its phases
Precontemplation > Contemplation > Preparation > Action > Maintenance > Relapse > Repeat
(stages of change shit)
What are the four elements of Motivational Interviewing?
[1] MI Spirit (collaboration, evoking intrinsic motivation to change, autonomy, and compassion)
[2] MI Principles (“RULE”)
[3] Change Talk (DARN-CAT)
[4] OARS
What does MI assume?
People are inherently AMBIVALENT about change
State the principles of Motivational Interviewing
“RULE”
R = RESIST telling them what to do, resist convincing what path to take
U = UNDERSTAND their motives, values, and needs, and potential barriers to change
L = LISTEN with empathy and seek to understand their perspective
E = EMPOWER by identifying their ambivalence and setting achievable goals
What are the Motivational Interviewing interventions?
DARN-CAT & OARS
[DARN] = Prep change talk
[CAT] = Implement change talk
[OARS] = reinforce the change talk
Define and discuss “DARN” (from the MI interventions system)
Preparatory change talk
D = DESIRE, I want to change
A = ABILITY, I can change
R = REASON, this is why it’s important to change
N = NEED, I should change
Define and discuss “CAT” (from the MI interventions system)
Implementing change talk
C = COMMITMENT, I will make changes
A = ACTIVATION, I am ready, prepared, and willing to
T = TAKING STEPS, I am taking these very specific action steps
Define and discuss “OARS” (from the MI interventions system)
Reinforcing the change talk through OARS
O = Open-ended questions
A = Affirmations
R = Reflective listening** (there are 4 ways to do this)
S = Summarize
What are the types of reflective listening?
PARAPHRASE: Moves beyond the client’s words and presents new info
AMPLIFIED: Overstates what he said
DOUBLE-SIDED: Reflects both sides of the ambivalent story
AFFECTIVE: Address the implied or expressed emotion
