Function of empathy
Rapport building, trust, therapist/client dynamic strengthens
What are the components of supportive/facilitative skills?
SETTING THE STAGE, clarify expectations, establish boundaries, confidentiality, acknowledge inherent challenges of the therapy process
ENGAGEMENT SKILLS, empathy, unconditional positive regard, congruence, respect, authenticity [these are the components of client-centered therapy)
EMPATHETIC COMMUNICATION, comes in the form of recognition and action
SELF-DISCLOSURE, authentic personal statements, timing/intensity should be considered
What are some types of different theories?
CASE THEORY: explains behavior of one person // my neighbor’s bipolar
MID-RANGE THEORY: explains a set of cases or an event // why cops mass murder people without weapons
GRAND THEORIES: Attempts to explain all sets of events // Freud’s stages of development
What is practice theory?
A subset of theories that are limited to a perspective on intervention with individuals, families, or groups.
Coherent sets of ideas that are VERIFIABLE and established with rationales for intervention(s)
Allows the clinician to predict/explain behavior, generalize problems, and identify knowledge gaps
What’s the other name for Client-Centered Theory?
Person-Centered Theory
What are the components of Client-Centered Theory?
CONGRUENCE, ability to be genuine without a facade
ACCEPTANCE, unconditional positive regard
EMPATHY, a desire to understand appreciate a unique experience
RESPECT, client has autonomy
AUTHENTICITY, avoid scripted scenarios

What is a boundary?
Guidelines/limits for permissible behavior and consequences for breaking them
Examples = behaving provocatively, interrupting, hostility, withdrawal, not speaking, cancelling, avoiding
Reasoning = treatment is forced, test therapist’s credibility, control, power, negative transference
