motivation is …
dynamic
appears in many sizes, shapes and forms
can be influenced by outside factors, such as a conversation with a competent social worker

Intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation:
things you do because you enjoy them (often things you are also good at)
Extrinsic motivation
things you do because they yield benefits, or because they help you avoid problems
Self determination theory (2000)
How to improve one’s intrinsic motivation
- stimulate sense of competence (confidence)
- stimulate sense of autonomy
- stimulate sense of connecting to others
Learning theory: rewards and punishments
“do rewards motivate people? absolutely, they motivate people to get rewards
(another example of extrinsic motivation)
Be careful with rewards! (can make natural behaviour disappear by turning it into extrinsic motivation)
us it, in sessions with your client, to your benefit.
Locus of control - theory
external locus of control: (determined by environment)
we lost because of two unjustified penalty kicks
i am on the bench because the trainer does not like me
Internal Locus of control: (determined by me)
we lost because we did not score enough goals
i am on the bench because i have not practiced enough
Stages of change - theory
(circular model) Pre-contemplation contemplation decision action maintenance relapse
Motivational interviewing (1983)
help them think about their own ambivalence
do’s:
listen, reflect, be empathic, summarise, accept
dont’s:
give your opinion, offer advice, judge, pressure, label
many problems are the result of one or two dynamics:
- they lack sufficient motivation
2. they lack sufficient skills
