what is the 3 criteria of being a vulnerable person by definition?
- minors under 18
- people living with a disability
- people needing assistance to meet their daily needs - including older adults
When is a child in need of protection?
when life, health, emotional wellbeing of a child is in jeapordy by the act or omission of adequate care, supervision or control
What is the nurse’s responsibility when it comes to vulnerable persons?
duty to report
who do we report to if it’s for an adult living with an intellectual disability ?
our supervisor - unit manager
and/or department of families
What is the PPCO and PPCA
Protection for persons in care office
Protection for persons in care act
Who is considered under the PPCA?
- personal care homes
- hospitals
- any other designated health facility
What two situations is reporting of abuse non-mandatory?
Elder/senior abuse
Domestic Violence
What are 5 things a nurse can do in their role when there is suspicion or admitting of abuse?
- recognize abusive situations
- know the legal responsibiilty and do it
- early intervention - know available resources and have skills to intervene
- Prevention - promote healthy parenting
- Document suspected abuse/neglect
Is there a distinction between what type of restraints can be used?
no
but should be least restraint possible
Does a nurse need consent to use restraints?
Typically a nurse should get consent from patient or SDM
in emergencies you can without consent but must inform family /SDM within 24 hours
