Week 6 Study Guide Flashcards
What is Motivational Interviewing?
the model for increasing self efficacy
What are the four principles?
Engage, Focus, Evoke, Plan
What is the principle of engage?
Relationship development to support client autonomy
Roll with resistance - a client’s resistance talk says more about the approach of the coach than about the client’s readiness for change.
Client’s don’t resist change, they resist being changed.
Focus on allowing the client to develop awareness of the gap that exists between present
behavior and important personal goals/values.
What is the principle of focus?
To develop clarity and specificity around goals. Exploring decisional balance can be a helpful tool. Goal of focusing is to help clarify values and goals
narrower than simply determining the focus and goals for a coaching session|
Guiding the client through the process of selecting a focus for goals by exploring
discrepancies between stated values/goals and their current behavior|
with narrowing the gap between the client’s present situation and their value/goals.
Empathy is key when engaging. No judgment – it’s the client’s agenda, not ours. Reflecting builds trust and rapport and the client feels validated.
What is the principle of evoking?
Evoke: Generate a connection between goals and motivations
! Goal of evoking is to uncover a client’s reasons for change, connecting their autonomous motivation and drive to goals
Developing growth promoting and relationship building strategies that support client autonomy
Building rapport, and understanding what a client hopes to gain
This is where we dig more into those things that support the client’s intrinsic motivations (and why)
Finding meaning: evoke connection between reasons for change and
meaning/purpose
Diving deeper into motivations (why is something important?)

jumping to planning without evoking could lead to resistance (and failure). It’s natural to want to jump to planning but evoking is key to determine what the client wants.
What is the principle of planning?
Plan: Design action plans that support self-efficacy
Goal of planning is to create an action plan that supports self-efficacy
The coach allows the client to take the lead with coming up with a change plan. Provide
guidance when a client gets stuck.
Ld Do not offer unsolicited advice or information
Md Always ask permission to share resources or feedback
! Action plan
Ld Ask permission: input is okay, just ask first
Md Elicit-provide-elicit
nd Don’t give advice, but coaches can clarify if a client asks, “What should I do?” d Consider asking permission to brainstorm
! MI is designed to build self-efficacy. With self-efficacy comes mobilization, and thus movement through the stage of change.

! Note: jumping to planning without evoking could lead to resistance (and failure). It’s natural to want to jump to planning but evoking is key to determine what the client wants.
Note: Process isn’t always linear, but all four principles need to happen.
