Q

STRAMENOPILES
diatoms

A
  • Range in size 5-200 microns
  • Unicellular and phototrophic
  • Phytoplankton of marine and fresh water
  • Important part of marine food web
  • Silica cell wall
    o Incredibly well preserved
 Which is why some of the best microbial fossils are diatoms
     Often symmetrical structure
  • Cell wall structure shape called a frustule
o This is what we see as a fossil
  • Some of the best Eukaryotic microbial fossils
  • Used in studies of change in environment
    o E.g. water pollution
