week 6 - protists --> Stramenopiles Flashcards
1
Q
STRAMENOPILES
A
- Grouped based on ‘hairy’ flagella
- Both chemoorganotrophs and phototrophs
- Micro and macro
2
Q
STRAMENOPILES
major groups
A
o Brown algae (multicellular)
o Golden algae
o Diatoms (silica cell wall)
o oomycetes
3
Q
STRAMENOPILES
diatoms
A
- Range in size 5-200 microns
- Unicellular and phototrophic
- Phytoplankton of marine and fresh water
- Important part of marine food web
- Silica cell wall
o Incredibly well preserved
Which is why some of the best microbial fossils are diatoms
Often symmetrical structure - Cell wall structure shape called a frustule
o This is what we see as a fossil - Some of the best Eukaryotic microbial fossils
- Used in studies of change in environment
o E.g. water pollution
