week 6 - protists --> Euglenozia Flashcards
1
Q
Euglenozoa superphyla
A
- Free living and parasitic
- Flagellated
o Characteristic feature is a crystalline rod in flagellum
For motility
Unique flagella - Generally has some sort of crystalline rod in it
- Sometimes formed of two flagella that work together within a Membrane sheeth
Whipping action
Cell moving in direction of flagella
2
Q
Euglenozoa superphyla
two major groups
A
- Kinetoplastids
- Euglenids
3
Q
Euglenozoa superphyla:
Kinetoplastids
A
- Contain KINETOPLAST:
o Mass of DNA in a single large mitochondria - Many are aquatic and feed on bacteria
- Some are parasites of animals
- Flagella is in cell wall as well as outside (so entire cell moves with flagella)
- Example: Trypanosoma
o Membrane encased flagellum
o African sleeping sickness or Chagas’ disease (dependent on species)
4
Q
Euglenozoa superphyla:
Euglenids
A
- Non-pathogenic
- Motile (2 flagella)
- Have chloroplasts
o Many can switch between heterotrophic and phototrophic depending on light levels - Aquatic
- Chemotrophic and phototrophic
- So can live in light and dark environments
- Some also able to feed on bacteria via phagocytosis
