Week 6: Flexibility Flashcards
Define flexibility
The ability to move a joint or a series of joints smoothly and easily through an unrestricted, pain-free ROM
How do we lose flexibility?
Psychosocial (anxiety, depression)
Biochemical (hormones, nutrition)
Biomechanical (daily living and the interactions our bodies encounter)
What is static flexibility training?
The total range a joint or muscle can achieve
No focus on speed
What is dynamic flexibility training?
The range of motion a joint or muscle can achieve in motion
What does range of movement exercise involve and what effect does it have?
Motving through the range within limits of tissues
Maintenance of current levels
What are the features of stretching exercises and what effect does it have?
Take soft tissue structures beyond their available length
Increase ROM
What are the two types of stretching exercises?
Unassisted
Assisted
Describe static stretching
Slow sustained lengthening (held by subject)
Just below point of bind
10 or more seconds
Describe ballistic/dynamic stretching
Bounding
Stretch is caused by bounding itself
Describe PNF stretching
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation
Biggest gains
Improves tolerance to stretch
What type of sensors are golgi tendon organs?
Contraction sensitive mechanoreceptors
Where are the golgi tendon organs?
Muscular tendon junction
What does the golgi tendon organ sense?
Tension
What is the function of the golgi tendon organ?
Inhibit the agonist
Excite the antagonist
What do muscle stretch receptors sense?
Speed at which a muscle lengthens
