Week 6: Correspondence Bw Cognition & Behavior Flashcards
2 kinds of situational activation of behaviours are
- Automatic goal pursuit/ goal dependent automaticity
2. Priming of cognition
How much the priming of cognition guides downstream behaviours depends on
Ease of retrieval
Lammers et al article on ease of retrieval showed that
- at high ease of retrieval, assimilation effect (high power cause high disobedience)
- at Low ease of retrieval, contrast effect (high power cause Low disobedience)
How does theory of planned behaviour go
Specific attitude + subjective norm (sig other approval) + perceived Beh control (do I have the ability to engage in the Beh) —> Beh intention — > Beh
Factors affecting correspondence bw cognition & Beh
- Match if specificity
- Accessibility, temporal stability (highest), direct experience, involvement, certainty, ambivalence (opp direction), affective- cog consistency)
- Deliberation of reasons for attitude
What are the parts of explicit & implicit cognition that we look at to determine match between cognition & behaviour
Explicit: look at match in specificity in theory of planned Beh
Implicit: extrapersonal associations
Do implicit measures predict behaviour in personalised IAT
YES!!!! much stronger correspondence bw implicit & Beh
Implicit of explicit cognition predict behaviour more
Stereotype:
Explicit: predicted and does not depend on gender
Implicit: effect of implicit on Beh depends on sex
Attitudes: both
Factors that determine implicit or explicit predict Beh more
MAOA
- Motivation (self presentation & controlling implicit response)
- Ability (cognitive capacity, knowing how to control influence)
- Opportunity (to interrupt automatic process)
- Awareness (of the implicit influence)
