Week 6 - Concepts Flashcards
Family resemblance
members of a category resemble each other I some way, due to shared characteristics & feature
Prototype
best example or cognitive representation of a group
graded membership
the fact that similarity is a graded notion
sentence verification task
given a sentence to verify true or false
-semantic memory
production task
people are given the topic, and from their personal prototype they organise what a representation of this prototype means most to them
ratings task
whereby people how much something is according to the prototype (how birdy are different types of birds
basic level categories
a natural level of organisation, a generalisation of the object
Exemplars
While a prototype is an abstract average of the members of a category, an exemplar is an actual member of a category, pulled from memory.
prototype - economical
exemplar - less economical
propositional network
Propositional networks are like semantic networks in that they contain nodes ( with words) and links between nodes, represented by symbols, not mental images
local representation
one node, one idea, one present for one stimuli
distributed representation
multiple layers of nodes make up one idea, as a clutter.
when activated,, then surrounding nodes will simultaneously get activated
The parallel distributed processing (PDP) model
neural networks interact to store memory
that memory is created by strengthening the connections between neural units.
