Week 6 Aseptic Practices and Wound Care Flashcards
Variances to intact skin, free from wounds and influences from internal and external impacts
Skin integrity
Open wound, deep or shallow, made by a surgical instrument
Incision
Closed wound characterized by blood vessel and tissue damage
Contusion
Open wound with damage to the skin layer
Abrasion
Deep penetrating incision to the skin and underlying tissues (intentional and unintentional)
Puncture
Open wound, tissue torn apart, skin and often underlying tissue
Laceration
Penetration of the skin and underlying tissue (unintentional)
Penetrating Wound
Lesion caused by interrupted blood supply from unrelieved pressure
Pressure Ulcer
The absence of bacteria and viruses
Asepsis
Material such as fluid and cells that has escaped from blood vessels during the inflammatory response. Three types
Exudate
The absence of bleeding
Hemostasis
Partial or total rupturing of a closed wound
Dehiscence
Where the tissue surface is closed and there is minimal tissue loss
Primary Intention
A wound with considerable tissue loss, where the edges cannot be closed
Secondary Intention Healing
If a wound continues underneath the edges it is called?
Undermining or tunnelling
Healing by ‘secondary intention’ refers to?
Open wounds healing from the base up
A healthy wound bed appears?
Pink or red and moist
A stage III pressure injury has?
Full thickness tissue loss
One of the benefits of negative pressure wound therapy is?
Blood flow to the wound is improved
Removing alternate sutures or staples from a wound decreases the risk of?
Wound dehiscence
Who gets pressure injuries?
Anyone and everyone
The next stage of wound healing after the Inflammation stage is?
Proliferation
‘Peri wound’ refers to the tissue surrounding the wound. It is typically around what size from the wound edges?
4cm
Sutures used to close surgical wounds are usually removed after how many post-operative days?
5 – 14 days
NPWT
Sutures
Haemoserous
Sterile field
Contamination
Haematoma
DuoDerm ® dressing
How often would you change a PICO?
2-3 days
