Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees 1967
Defines a refugee as a person who seeks asylum because of a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or political opionion
Key rights people have when seeking asylum:
Right to travel to and enter a country in order to seek asylum
Right not to be returned to somewhere their lives or freedom would be at risk (right of non-refoulement)
Right to access schooling, the courts, healthcare and employment
Refugees have the obligation to follow and respect the laws of the country they are seeking asylum in
Australia is signatory to the Convention and Protocol, but has been criticized by the UN for harming the human rights of refugees.
