Magna Carta 1215
The Great Charter
Introduced significant principles into English law such as:
The right to a fair trial, including trial by jury
That no person, including the King, is above the law
These principles developed into modern systems of human rights such as the UDHR and Declaration of Independence
Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth)
Outlaws racial discrimination in accordance with Australia’s committments made in ICERD;
Discrimination occurs under the act when:
Someone is unfairly treated because of their race
A rule or policy has an unfair effect on members of one race, as compared to others
Examples of discrimination it outlaws:
S11 - Access to public places, such as perk and libraries
S12 - Housing and accommodation, including renting and buying
S13 - Provision of goods and services, including banks and food
S15 - Employment
S18 - Offensive, insulting, humiliating or intimidating speech
Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth)
Commonwealth Act ratifying CEDAW
Prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, marital or relationship status, actual or potential pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex status or breastfeeding
Applies to everyday life such as:
Employment
Education
Goods and Services
Outlaws sexual harassment in areas such as the workplace or education
