Human rights?
A right which is believed to belong to every person
Covenants?
Formal agreement/s to codify human rights
Treaties?
A formally concluded and ratified agreement between states
States?

Supreme power or authority
Signatory treaty?
a State that is in political support of the treaty and willing to continue its engagement with the treaty process.
Convention?
an agreement between states covering particular matters, especially one less formal than a treaty.
Multilateral?
agreed upon or participated in by three or more parties, especially the governments of different countries.
Bilateral?
agreed upon or participated in by two parties, especially the governments of different countries.
Ratification?
the action of signing or giving formal consent to a treaty, contract, or agreement, making it officially valid.
Bill of rights?
a formal declaration of the legal and civil rights of the citizens of any state, country, federation, etc.
Royal Commission?
a commission of inquiry appointed by the Crown on the recommendation of the government.
Bill of Rights?
Document that lists the fundamental human rights of a nation
Provides the legal ability to make rights claims against the government or other individuals
It can also be used as a political tool
Example: In USA there is the 1st amendment and 2nd amendment for the right to freedom of speech and bear arms
Most nations have Bill of Rights and Australia doesn’t
International Bill of Rights?
Informal name given to 3 multilateral agreements which collectively define and protect fundamental human rights
Australia is a party to all 3 agreements, but has not ratified them into domestic law

- International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
- International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
