Characteristics of the Convention on the Rights of the Child 1991?

A

Sets out special civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights for children
Children defined as humans aged less than 18
Provides that children have their own rights, which are not dependant on their parents, background or age
The best interests of children should be in primary consideration

Article 9 - Children should not be seperated from their parents unless its for their own good
Article 12 - Children have the right to say what they think should happen when adults are making decisions that affect them
Article 16 - Children have the right for privacy
Article 24 - Children have the right to good quality health, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment
Article 24 - Children have the right to education

Characteristics of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women 1979 (CEDAW)?

A

International treaty that outlines the rights based on the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of gender.
Australia signed the convention in 1980, and ratified it as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984
It promotes civil and political rights (e.g. right to vote, run for election)
It makes discrimination unlawful on the basis of gender with respect to employment, education and goods and services
It promotes family and reproductive rights (e.g. access to child care, right to decide number and spacing of children)
Does not consider trans and other gendered people.

Characteristics of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD)?

A

Nations commit to eliminating racial discrimination in all its forms
Government must not themselves practice racial discrimination
Governments must no support or defend racial discrimination

Pass laws that:
Prohibit racial discrimination by organisations and businesses
Prohibit hate speech, crimes and racist activities
Ban organisations which promote racism

Nations commit to promoting racial understanding and tolerance
